I have no idea how but I cannot find my pestle and mortar and it's not in it's original spot. Any way to retrieve it or am I starting again?

It must be somewhere, nothing like that is ever destroyed or gone, it's just one the floor somewhere, maybe you accidentally dropped it from your inventory somewhere when lightening your load

Perhaps you just misplaced them, like in a container you left behind?

I believe since the mortar is a contain it can't be placed in a different container

I feel like I've looked everywhere.. Ah well, back with my parents for a few days over the holidays, I have time for a new game!

I commonly place the mortar in a sack along with alchemy ingredients.

So I started a new game and I am keeping a more regimented account of my inventory. Thanks for the help, guys!

oops, duh, you guys are right! It's sacks you can't place in mortars

Which is sad, since I'm sure the recipe for a red bag is 3 blooddrop blossoms and a sack.
