Missile Assassin rogue viable?

Hey all, I recently got legend of grimrock and was wondering if the Assassin skill's Backstab perks give bonus damage to ranged attacks or whether they only applied to melee. I know you can max 1 skill and still have 10-20 points remaining for a secondary skill by the end of the game. I'm sort of at a loss as to what skill to take for my ranged rogue apart from missile weapons since he doesn't need to evade anything (being in the rear line next to my mage) and isn't using unarmed, thrown, or daggers.

Assassin skills are melee only, as stated at the top of this skills overall description.

In case you maxed your Missile Weapon skill and don't see a need for Dodge skills i'd grab anything that adds to Strength (for more damage) and Health. In example 4 points into Assassination and another 4 into Throwing Weapons for Strength +1 will give you Strength +2 which is equal to +1 overall damage while 8 points into Unarmed Combat will add 15 Health.

Makes sense. Thanks for the tips. Kind of a shame that backstab doesn't apply to ranged though. I fail to see how shooting someone in the back is significantly different from stabbing them in the back. Then again, this is a game where archers need nothing but strength -_-.
