Silly lore question: How are they chained?

What the title says, really. We know the four Grimrock prisoners are chained to each other and this is why they stick together and move as one through the dungeon. But how are they chained exactly?
At first I assumed they'd be shackled around the neck, but then I went back to look at the intro images:
Exhibit A seems to suggest they're chained by the hands, while Exhibit B would point more towards them being chained by the waist.
I guess it makes more sense if they're chained around the waist, since that would allow them to equip all the clothes and armour they find. A chain around the neck would limit upper-body clothes to jackets (nothing you have to pull over your head) and one at the wrist, even if it's only one hand, would make even jackets impossible.
So I guess it's the waist after all? Just checking in case I want to do some Grimrock fanart.
