Losing image quality creating icons in GIMP2

Post by akroma222 »

Hey people :)
Just a question regarding GIMP2 - recently I added a number of icons to my icon atlas
(akroma_icon_atlas_current - http://ge.tt/6m8wu9b - updated 25-3-13)

Now, when creating these icons, I have cut and pasted from other DDS images and in some cases have just simply re-coloured and pasted in icons from the original Grimrock asset pack atlas.
From there, in all cases, I have zoomed in to 1600% and have touched up each icon (ensuring there is a clear black outline, blending/shading colours together) so much so that even at 1600% the icon looks as good as can be. So going back to 100%-200% zoom (about the size you would see the icon in game) the icons actually looked very crisp and clear.

Issue >> This morning, I have found significant degradation in the quality of each icon (black outlines are disrupted or missing... colours look like they have altered at 200%-400% zoom and not at all like 1600%). The icons still look passable and usable... but not nearly as good as they did. Further, this does not happen after each export. I exported numerous times while creating these extra icons and there did not seem to be a loss in quality. But today upon opening up the atlas in GIMP2 - there has been significant loss in quality.

(If you want to see the loss in quality, download "akroma_icon_atlas_old" as well and compare them in GIMP2)

What has me quite confused is that the last icon I cut/pasted (just before posting this - to test some theories) was a plain shield (download the atlas^ - it is the last icon). I tried exporting at BC1/DXT1 and also BC3/DXT5 ... in both cases there was no loss in quality for the shield at all. :?

My only clue here is that GIMP2 did actually crash the night before (and I lost a few icons) with an error message about the GUI not being very happy about something. Could GIMP2 crashing actually result in quality loss of files? I would not have thought so.....

Has anyone had any issues similar to this when creating custom icons??? If there is a loss in quality along the line that can not be avoided, I would like to know so I do not waste time detailing icons at 1600% zoom. Hopefully this is just a once off thing.
And hopefully info in answer to this can help others to avoid this from happening. As I just lost a lot of hours of work - and that is never a good thing
