tried redownloading the game a few times but it didn't help change anything.

Same thing here - purchased through Steam and have the same "MapViewOfFile failed" error message. This is on an i7-2600k, 8GB of memory, Win. 7 x64, and a HD 7870...

Fixed mine.
Had to revalidate the game files via Steam.
Library -> Right click Legend of Grimrock -> Properties -> Local Files -> Verify Integrity of Game Cache

I went to launch the game again and it downloaded a ninja-patch; it now loads and runs.
Time for dungeon crawling!
