Achievement carry-over from standalone?

I downloaded standalone to begin with, since Steam didn't have the game available yet, I've now played a bit into level 3, and I believe I have some items that qualify for some of the achievements where you have to pick up X items, etc.

Two questions:

1. If I install via Steam now, can I continue playing with my existing savegame? Self-answered: YES
2. If yes, will the items I already have count towards the achievement, or are they only counted when I actually pick them up?

I can summarize these two into this: If I *really* want the achievements, do I have to start over? (which is fine if I have to, the game is so fun that's just a minor inconvenience.)

I believe the devs said it should work in theory. Worth a shot.
