side to side doors that disappear into the frame

hey folks,

I've got a little problem in my dungeon in that I use a lot of single-depth walls but, for aesthetic reasons, I want to use sliding doors with them.

All well and good till you realise that they will always not only ovelap the walls one one side but actually just out on corners - so look like cr*p in other words

would it be doable to have them vanish as they open? If so, how? any ideas

an example screengrab - please ignore the crappy textures atm the wallset is definately a wip

It wouldn't make any sense for that door to disappear.
Best option is to make it slide into ceiling or floor.

Perhaps by creating a model of door without the sliding door, only the frame around.

When the door is close, you spawn your full model, when the door is open, you destroy the full model and spawn the model with only the frame door over. Thus, the problem exists only during the animation. So just during the animation hides the side of the door with a secret wall (or place an illusion wall, or a dust effect FX or etc...).

Yeah I agree with your point, but I'm just being stubborn I guess lol, thanks :D

If you were really crazy hell bent on achieving this I presume you could remodel the door out of strips and animate it so that the strips 'fold away' one at a time into the wall (instead of just scaling the whole door away, which would look super weird texture wise).

Each strip would scale to 0 width and would disappear.

Of course, this means rebuilding in 3DS Max, texturing and exporting using the anim export. But, just saying... I think is doable if not time expensive!

Holy crap^^
What would a real door do in such a situation? ;)

A better idea would be a rotated pit with the open/close animations switched and an invisible blockage when it looks closed. (But the pit would be open)
I have had bad experience in retexturing pits, however.

Well the sliding doors in LoG open to both sides so there are two options. The easy one is pretty simple: don't place sliding doors at corners. The other one has already been mentioned: create your own door that slides the way you like it to.

You can do a door that slides in one direction by taking a regular door and playing with the gate node's rotation.

Well there are wooden blind doors that kinda roll up into the frame and that's more or less the effect that I'm looking for.

Basically I'm working on a bloodwych wallset with a view to a possible remake and since the original has wooden doors on corners that slide then they have to go on corners unfortunately.

Since I've only just started playing with blender and modelling in general whilst playing about with this I must confess I've about got my head around extruding  so I will have a play around given some of the excellent ideas you guys have given me and I'll see what I can come up with tho I'll probably just end up with an upwards sliding door

Thanks for the responses :D
