casting light spell on party

Hi guys,
Been digging around most of the evening trying to find a way to do this but have drawn a blank, is there any way to cast the light spell on the part via a script?
I've tried spawning it on top of the party but the editor just exits preview mode,
I've kinda got a spawned light entity following the party around but the effect just isn't very smooth
