I'm actually not excited by the idea of outside areas in LoG2.
I associate outside with very large areas - much bigger than a level of LoG1, and with wide open spaces. I don't think such areas would really work well with normal LoG gameplay, because most puzzles, exploration, and combat challenges depend on fairly cramped spaces with corners and doors and secret buttons, and dead-ends and stuff like that. That kind of stuff doesn't fit as naturally in an outdoor setting. And if the outside areas of LoG2 aren't very large, with wide spaces and so on, then it probably won't really feel like an outside area anyway. It will be more like an indoor area with no ceiling...
I trust that Almost Human has some good ideas for how to use the outdoor setting without compromising gameplay or atmosphere, but I personally don't have high expectations for the outdoor side of things. My guess is that outdoors will probably be just a small part of the game, so that it can be done fairly well without exhausting its limited potential.
Lands of Lore and Eye of the beholder, has open outdoor areas, but the passages were tight just like inside, so It worked fine.
Regarding the two screenshots of the sky, not a deal breaker at all, but it does look a bit funny when you also see the sun not matching the illuminated angle of the clouds.
Or for a bit bigger areas, the original pool of radiance.. or even bigger outdoor areas, might and magic (3 at least; I haven't played a lot of those).. it can work =)

I think the most valuable thing that an outside area does in a Dungeon Crawler is link together inside areas - which means that the game doesn't have to be 'floor 1->N' and can have some non-linearity. I kind of agree that the Dungeon Crawler engine doesn't make for overly realistic city or natural outdoor environments - but used in moderation they can make the world feel a lot more real, give a place for NPCs to live to drive plot and join up more awesome dungeons for us to explore!
