D3DError - CreateDevice failed: D3DERR_DEVICELOST

Post by mindragon73 »

Hi all!

I get this error almost immediately when trying to start LoG2, both when trying to start from Steam and from the exe itself.
"D3DError - CreateDevice failed: D3DERR_DEVICELOST"

I verified the files on Steam and they were ok.
I have the latest drivers for my graphics card.
Every other game in my Steam library I´ve tried seem to work ok.

My computer looks like this:

Windows 7, 64-bit
System: MS-7673
Intel COre i5-2500L CPU @ 3.30 GHz (4CPUs). ~3.3GHZ
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570
Memory: 8192MB RAM
DirectX-version: DirectX 11

So, any tips what I could try?

In the game directory, there are two folders in _CommonRedist. These should install automatically when you first launch the game through Steam. However, it's possible they haven't.

It's worth running DirectX/Jun2010/DXSETUP.exe and vcredist/2010/vcredist_x64.exe to make sure these dependencies are installed correctly. You sound pretty tech savvy, so you probably already know this - but it's worth making sure you have the latest stable (but not beta) drivers direct from the NVidia site.

Check my thread. I had the same issue.

You may need to update your (video) drivers. Go to the website for your drivers and check - don't trust the Windows Update.

For example, I have the nVidia GeForce card - Windows said up to date. Go to the site, and there's definitely a new driver. Installed. Rebooted. Resolved.

Thanks for the suggestions!

I double (and triple) checked my drivers, and those I already had were indeed the latest stable drivers for my card on the Nvidia site (version 344.11, date: 2014-09-18).
I also ran both vcredist_x64.exe and DXSETUP.exe, but sadly I still get the same error.

I´ll keep googling and trying stuff, but If you have any other ideas you´re more than welcome to suggest them!

Sounds silly, but with all of the little changes from installing the game etc. Have you just tried restarting your PC?

Not too silly, because I am not sure if it was updating my drivers or rebooting that resolved mine. (Since my drivers, prior to the update were 7/2014, which is only 3 months old!)

So a simple reboot may have been the fix for me as well; it just so happened that I updated the drivers, which requires a reboot to finish.

No, that´s not silly, but yes, I restarted the computer after reinstalling the latest drivers and the other stuff.

I did however notice that I no longer can start Legend of Grimrock 1 either (same error message) , which used to work perfectly fine.
Most of my other Steam games seem to work though.

I had some troubles getting The Vanishing of Ethan Carter to work a couple of weeks ago, and resolved that by following a forum suggestion that I should swap some of the 32-bit dll-files for 64-bit ones (as I recall it msvcr100.dll was one of them).
I´m starting to think that that may be what´s causing problems here perhaps.
I´ll dig into that at when I get the time.

It seems your Direct-X installation is borked. Reinstall Direct-X

So, I reinstalled/updated Direct X 11 , and also the June 2010 version of DirectX 9 (which seems to be the same that is included with the game), but still no luck.
Also ran every Windows update available.

Any other tips? Any particular dll that can cause this problem?

Does this happen if you run grimrock in windowed mode?

You can change displayMode to 1 in grimrock.cfg with a text editor. The config file is at
