How do boss battles work?

Hi guys,
Id like to be able to make combat music happen and im wondering if the boss battle item is the way to do that.
Initally i was trying to make a trigger spawn a monster and start music, but 1. I cant put the on death effect on a spawned monster (i dont know how) and 2. i cant find how to start music, or a list of playable sounds.
Anyone care to straighten me out?
