Different Map sizes inofficially supported!(?)

So I tinkered a bit with the editor and found that maps can now be pretty much any rectangle size. :!:

For example, you can open your dungeon.lua and edit the width and heigth of a (hopefully empty) map, like this:

Code: Select all

newMap{
	width = 64,
	height = 16
}
Then open / reload the module. :shock:

Now, there are a few problems with this:
  • When using the above method to change the map size to a different number than 1024 squares, the amount of tiles in the tiles layer has to be manually adjusted, which could possibly be tedious if done often
  • When using an exit on the top or left edge of a map, onto a non-32x32 map, the player will either spawn in the middle of the map (if the map is bigger) or the editor will give an error (if the map is smaller). This can be circumvented by using stairs with custom destination points.
  • If the map is bigger then 32 in any direction, all tiles after 32 (counted from top left) won't be displayed on the in-game map at all.
I would like to have a statement by our beloved devs on this; is this something that was scrapped halfway through development to never return to or will there be an update that will change this to be fully supported by the editor and the game? :)

128x128 levels would be beyond 8-)

During beta you could change the map size yes, but there are some serious issues with it.
Automap doesn't scale with the bigger map sizes and if you make a map bigger then 32x32 and walk from tile 32 to 33 you will see gfx glitches and heightmap glitches.
It was scrapped for a reason :)

The engine supports map sizes up to 256x256 but unfortunately it was too tricky to make the automap easy to use and good looking while supporting generic map sizes so we dropped the feature. Also I believe there are some problems with heightmaps with non 32x32 map size.

nice. So seems that could explain that objects placed outside the map like shipwreck etc... :)

Ah yes, good call, this can be useful for eye candy and presentation of where player is moving to next. In a village that is two maps wide, connection could be an archway that shows the next couple buildings as placeholders, then when you actually transition it would be on the other map and you can turn around and see a bit back with placeholders from the other side.

Or is that not how it works?

Not sure at all, but ... already tried to up the dungeon.lua file not only with modifying 32x32 by 64x64, but in modifying manually all the loadLayers (Tiles, Heightmaps, etc ) schemas like that :
SpoilerShow

Code: Select all

newMap{
	name = "Unnamed",
	width = 32,
	height = 32,
	levelCoord = {0,0,0},
	ambientTrack = "dungeon",
	tiles = {
		"dungeon_floor",
		"dungeon_floor_water",
		"dungeon_wall",
	}
}

loadLayer("tiles", {

Yes, 256x256 maps would be awesome!
