...it just boggles my mind that people seriously bitch about Grimrock 1&2 not being turn-based. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE turn-based RPGs, but here's the thing: I love turn-based RPGs (and other TB games) that place a huge emphasis on positioning--games like Divinity OS, Wasteland 2, Advance Wars, XCOM--what have you! What I don't like is JRPG style turn-based combat where you're simply mashing "Attack" 90% of the time, which seems to be the case in the new Might and Magic; if you're gonna have that kind of turn based combat within this sub-genre, you may as well make it real-time as that at least allows for positioning to play a role.
All I can say is, thank you AH for not giving in to peoples' ludicrous cries for the game to be turn-based; in all likelihood, it would have made the game a terrible chore to play through.

Re: After Having Tried M&M X Legacy....
I think you can make a good tile-based dungeon crawler both ways. But Grimrock is well-designed around real-time.
Re: After Having Tried M&M X Legacy....
Well that's not really fair to judge all turn-based blobbers based on just M&M X. That's just one not very good game out of a whole genre. It's like saying all RTwP isometric games are bad just because NWN2 had poor combat.
If done well turn-based offers a lot over real time. You can add much more depth and balance to the system, aswell as more nuanced AI. And while some people like the tile-dancing in Grimrock, I much prefer the more thought-out tactical battle (of say - Wizardry) over Grimrock's "click as fast as you can while kiting in 2x2 grid".

Re: After Having Tried M&M X Legacy....
M&M X Legacy is a VERY bad example of Turn-Based games.
Having tried it myself, its EVEN harder than Dungeons of the Unforgiven and Ancients I: Deathwatch combined... and that is saying something. I ended up dying so much (as you cannot retreat from combat once in combat; who's bright idea was that? Turn-based games NEED a retreat option) I ended up cheating. AND it was still brutally hard AFTER cheating excessively. It was a poorly made game, with cruddy graphics, poor performance, terrible campaign and horrendous turn-based mechanics.
In fact, the spells in M&M X Legacy were even WORSE than the spells in Grimrock 1&2. Less variety, less damage, less scaling, and FAR FAR FAR higher mana cost. Like seriously your magic users get like 50 mana, and each of your spells costs like 30 to 40 mana (the lowest level ones; higher level ones are even worse), with no mana regeneration unless resting.
So no, if you don't like M&M X Legacy I don't blame you. But don't compare most turn-based games to it.

Re: After Having Tried M&M X Legacy....
I like both styles.
I really like how AH merged real time and actually hand eye coordination with a traditional grid based crawler.
I also liked M&MX for what it was but it could of used a lot of work. And they really f'd up not getting the modding aspect correct because that would of added a lot of longevity to that title.
As it was to mod skills and enemies you needed to change variables in each of their respective files directly.
There was no global anything. It was very sloppy.
However it was an interesting time. I love grid based dungeon crawlers though...
prob my fav genre!

Re: After Having Tried M&M X Legacy....
MMX had some potential, but... their whole combat system is based around the idea that your spellcaster will cast the same two buffs every round in combat for the whole game. I'm fighting Banshees? Time for my Freemage to cast Burning Determination every 3 rounds. And if it ever drops, I lose instantly. Same with the Regeneration spell and Celestial Armor.
Anyways, definitely do not judge turn based RPG combat as a whole by M&M X's performance.

Re: After Having Tried M&M X Legacy....
M&M X was a nice return to that world, I enjoyed the play through. I played pretty soon after release, and subsequently, my experience was a bit marred by a ton of bugs and performance issues. Almost Human's LoG2 was such a polished gem though, it can really make any game of this style pale in comparison.
