is there a certain order in which the buttons have to be pushed in order to open the door in the spike area
i've died a 100 times here any help would be appreciated

Yes there is an order and also a hint scroll towards it.

Yeah, if I remember correctly the hint is written in the scroll in the same room.
If you haven't found the scroll, it's located here:
on the floor behind one of the locked gates in the room. You have to reach through the bars to get it.
(it might have been a note, not a scroll, but that's where it should be)
