Can't melee attack

Really looking forward to this game. Just started playing, but can't "for the love of god" figure out how to melee attack!!
Is there a key+mouse combo or what am I missing?

Just right click the weapon while it's held in hand by a character. Only the characters in the front row (upper two portraits) can perform melee attacks.
