There's a stone head the game that says

The serpents can be awakened.

I thought this was referring to

SpoilerShow

the serpent statues in front of the pyramid, so I tried my best to "awaken" them. Attacking them, casting fire spells on them (because snakes are cold-blooded creatures), etc.

What does this message really refer to?

It isn't about the statues themselves. It's referring to the means used to open the pyramid door.

Yeah, I was so sure they would wake up when I shot them with the staff, or when I put it in the alcove. Took me a while to find out what I was really supposed to do.
