Game crashed while saving and now save is corrupted?

I just went ahead and deleted my old save file, but I'd still like to figure out what caused this error just in case it happens again. I posted this over on the Steam forum, but I figured it'd be good to branch out and get more help. I'll just copy/paste my opening post and the error message I received.
I had a total playtime of something like 5 hours. I had just reached this area, I think it was 3 floor downs, where I happened upon my first skeleton archer and he was standing on one side of the room and there was 3 or 4 large bat creatures in there as well with 2 trap doors in the middle of the room blocking my way way across. I killed all the flying enemies and then looped around the pit from the side area, killed the skeleton archer and then I hit ESC to bring up my menu and suddenly the game froze. I could still move my mouse around on the screen and it was the Grimrock pointer, not my desktop pointer, and I clicked Save Game and after about 30 seconds the save menu stuttered up very slowly and then I clicked on my save and after about a minute I heard a strange stuttering sound and the game crashed. I had to turn my Alpha off because I was locked out of everything, CTRL+ALT+DELETE wouldn't even work.
After I got back on and started the game up, it worked perfectly like normal on the main menu, but as soon as I hit Load Game, it immediately crashes and gives me a large error message about the save. I'm not at home so I don't know exactly what it says, but I did a google search and the only thing I found was from 2012 and they said the saves that that happened to would be fix in the coming patch. Obviously that patch hit because its 2015. Is there anything I can do or should I start over?
This is the error I'm getting as soon as I hit Load Game, before it even lets me see my saves.

I'm going to copy my save file to a different folder, delete the one in the Grimrock folder and then create a save and see if it still crashes after I create an entirely new save without the presence of the old save.
I copied the saves to my desktop, deleted them from the Grimrock folder and booted it up, selected new game and let it auto generate characters for me. Saved the game as soon as it started and exited out, when at the main menu I pressed Load Game and it worked just fine. I then replaced my old saves back into the Grimrock folder and it immediately crashed when pressing Load Game. So the problem lies entirely with my old save file, but how exactly could just my saves become corrupted like that?
